La police néo-zélandaise a introduit un hijab dans son uniforme officiel pour encourager davantage de femmes musulmanes à le rejoindre.
La nouvelle recrue Constable Zeena Ali deviendra le premier officier à porter le hijab officiel.
Un porte-parole a déclaré qu’ils visaient à créer un service « inclusif » reflétant la « communauté diversifiée » du pays.
D’autres forces telles que la police métropolitaine de Londres et la police écossaise offrent l’option d’un hijab uniforme.
Au Royaume-Uni, la police métropolitaine de Londres a approuvé un hijab uniforme en 2006, suivi de la police écossaise en 2016. En Australie, Maha Sukkar de la police de Victoria portait un hijab en 2004.
La police néo-zélandaise a déclaré que les travaux de développement du hijab pour son uniforme avaient commencé fin 2018 en réponse à une demande du personnel de police qui s’était rendu dans des écoles secondaires.
La gendarme Ali a été la première recrue à en faire la demande dans le cadre de son uniforme et a été invitée à participer au processus de développement.
L’agente Ali, qui est née aux Fidji et a déménagé en Nouvelle-Zélande lorsqu’elle était enfant, a déclaré au New Zealand Herald qu’elle avait décidé de rejoindre la police après l’attaque terroriste de Christchurch.
« J’ai réalisé qu’il fallait plus de femmes musulmanes dans la police, pour aller soutenir les gens », a-t-elle déclaré au quotidien national.
« C’est génial de pouvoir sortir et montrer le hijab de la police néo-zélandaise dans le cadre de mon uniforme », a-t-elle ajouté. « Je pense qu’en voyant cela, davantage de femmes musulmanes voudront également nous rejoindre. »
